The other weekend 12 friends and I went to Lisbon for ‘the twins’ (Ellie and Steffie’s) birthday. I had never been to Lisbon, let alone Portugal before and had no idea what to expect…. All I knew was that the food was going to be incredible and it certainly did NOT disappoint…. so I thought I’d share my top list of where to go and eat yummy Portuguese food near Lisbon.
Custard Tarts – Pastéis de Belém – Belém
The ONLY place to get Custard Tarts in Portugal, and only a ten minute train ride from Lisbon to Belem, the birthplace of the Custard Tart. Just don’t make the mistake I made of asking for “Pastéis de Nata” aka Custard Tarts…. if you don’t call them “Pastéis de Belém” you wont get served! They are incredily proud of their custard tart heritage here…. Go to Pastéis de Belém, opened in 1837, to try the original recipe.
Authentic Tapas – Taberna Tosca – Lisbon
This tavern has an amazing selection of Portuguese wines and everything here is regional, down to the last slice of chouriço assado (flaming chorizo!) They can tell you exactly where in Portugal your order is from and when it was made. Lovely little plates make it easy to share with friends…. I also had the cuttlefish here and it was amazing.
Healthy Food – House of Wonders -Cascais
This was my favourite restaurant of the whole trip! A ridiculously beautiful Vegan/Veggie health-food spot in the hippie chic beach-town of Cascais, you have to try the fresh juices and the Vegetarian mezze platter for two. Go upstairs to eat on their open air roof terrace like we did.
